Needles, bobbins and feet for a Singer Heavy Duty, model by model
All eight Singer Heavy Duty models here take Class 15 transparent bobbins and snap-on presser feet; the needle is the part to check by model. The table gives what Singer's manuals and product pages say for each one, and where to look when they don't say.
The short answer
All eight Singer Heavy Duty models covered here, the 4411, 4423, 4432 and 4452 and the newer 4511, 4523, 4532 and 4552, take Class 15 transparent bobbins and snap-on presser feet. The needle is where Singer's documents differ. The 4511, 4523, 4532 and 4552 manuals name system 130/705H. The 4432 and 4452 manuals name Singer's own needle styles, 2020, 2045 and 2032, and print no system code. For the 4411 and 4423, Singer's product pages give the bobbin and the feet but not the needle, so check the needle section of your model's manual.
For a first project in medium-weight woven cotton, the basket is short: Class 15 transparent bobbins, needles of the kind your manual names in size 80 or 90, and no new feet unless the project needs one your machine didn't come with. Size 80 to 90 is what the 4432, 4452 and 45xx manuals give for medium-weight cotton, and Singer's general needle guide gives 14/90 for medium-weight fabric. When you do buy a Singer foot, look for MB in the listing's Machine Compatibility codes. Singer's group table gives MB to the 4411, 4423, 4432 and 4452, and its What is My Machine Group? page, linked at the end of this page, lists the 45xx models in the same entry.

Singer's manuals page links the 4411 manual for the Heavy Duty PRISMA too, and the 4432 manual for the 4432 Black Special Edition, so those editions use the same rows. Singer's group selector also files color editions under the base model number: PRISMA and Pink under the 4411, Meltwater under the 4423, Black and Sterling under the 4432, and Rosewater and White under the 4452.
Bobbins: Class 15 transparent, not 15J and not metal
Singer's product pages for the 4411, 4423, 4432 and 4452 list the bobbin as Class 15 transparent. The 4411, 4423 and 4452 pages recommend Singer or Inspira branded bobbins; the 4432 page names Singer only. The four 45xx manuals are stricter: use only the transparent Class 15 type the machine shipped with. Their troubleshooting pages list the wrong bobbin as a cause of bobbin thread breaking and of a machine that won't run, and the fix ends with "don't substitute."
Singer's own catalog has two near-misses:
- Class 15J. Singer lists its 15J transparent bobbins for Futura 2600, 3900, 7400 and 8700 series machines and the Izek 1500. No Heavy Duty model is named.
- Class 15 metal. Singer's metal pack names select Singer machines and the Brother XL3010, XL3022 and VX1120. The Heavy Duty documents call for the transparent type.
A loose 15J is easy to mistake for a Class 15 transparent, since both are clear plastic. Singer's bobbin guide tells them apart: the Class 15 transparent is completely flat on both faces with no color tint, and the 15J is very slightly curved on both faces with a very slight blue tint. The same guide says not to use a Class 15 metal or a 15J bobbin in place of the Class 15 transparent.
Singer's transparent Class 15 pack, SKU D2134, holds four bobbins. Its listing names brands rather than models and says to confirm the size in your manual; for these eight machines, the documents above are that confirmation. Before switching to prewound bobbins, read whether prewound Class 15 bobbins will work. If your machine isn't in the table, measure the bobbin and match the class first.
Needles: what each manual names
The 45xx manuals recommend system 130/705H and say the pack in the box holds the most-used sizes. Their guide runs from size 70 to 80 for lightweight fabrics, 80 to 90 for medium weights, 100 for canvas and denim, and 110 for coat-weight wool and upholstery. They describe universal, stretch, denim and embroidery needles, and suggest a new needle every 6 to 8 hours of stitching.
The 4432 and 4452 manuals list Singer style numbers instead. Style 2020 is a standard sharp needle for natural wovens such as cotton, wool and silk. Style 2045 is a semi-ball point for knits, and the manuals list it for natural and synthetic wovens and polyester blends too. Both run from size 9 (70) to 18 (110). Style 2032, for leather and vinyl, runs from 12 (80) to 18 (110). The manuals ask for genuine Singer needles and suggest a new one about every other garment.
Singer's needle guide calls style 2020 its Universal needle, 2045 Ball Point and 2032 Leather, and gives Denim as 2026. Singer's store names its needle packs by type and size, such as Universal Needles 80/12 10-Pack, and the titles carry neither a style number nor a system. Its Universal Needles Assorted Sizes 5-Pack, for instance, holds one 70/10, two 80/12 and two 90/14. So on a 4432 or 4452, match the type and the size; on a 45xx, check the pack itself for 130/705H.
The 4432, 4452 and 45xx manuals all have you fit the needle with its flat side to the back, and all set the needle to the center position for a twin needle. On the 4523, 4532 and 4552, the built-in threader works with sizes 70 to 110 only; size 60 or finer, wing needles and twin needles are threaded by hand. Presser feet: snap-on, Singer group MB
All eight take snap-on presser feet. Singer's manuals describe changing one in two ways:
- HD 4511, 4523, 4532 and 4552: with the needle up and the foot raised, press the release lever that sticks out the back of the presser foot holder, and the foot comes off. Set the new foot with its pin directly under the slot in the holder, then lower the presser foot lifter until the foot snaps into place.
- 4432 and 4452: raise the presser foot, then raise the release lever, and the foot disengages. To fit a foot, lower the shank with the presser foot lifter until its cut-out is directly above the foot's pin; the foot engages on its own.
- 4411 and 4423: Singer's product pages say only that the feet snap on. Check your model's manual for the steps.
Singer marks fit on its foot listings with Machine Compatibility codes. Its machine-group table puts the 4411, 4423, 4432 and 4452 in group MB. The 45xx models aren't in that table, but Singer's What is My Machine Group? page lists the 4511, 4523, 4532 and 4552 in the same Heavy Duty entry as the 44xx models. That page is linked at the end of this one; pick your machine there and it shows the code.
Two listings show how the codes read. Singer's Blind Hem Presser Foot, SKU 250059596.01, lists MB and is a snap-on foot. Singer's Even Feed / Walking Presser Foot, SKU 250060096.01, also lists MB but doesn't snap on: Singer's instructions, and the 4452 manual's, have you take off the foot holder and screw the walking foot to the presser bar.
What came in the box, so you don't buy a duplicate:
- 4411, 4423 and 4432: general purpose, zipper, buttonhole and button sewing feet.
- 4452: those four, plus a non-stick foot, an even feed/walking foot and a clearance plate.
- 4511: all purpose, zipper, 4-step buttonhole and blind hem feet.
- 4523 and 4532: all purpose, zipper, one-step buttonhole and blind hem feet.
- 4552: the 4523's four, plus even feed and non-stick feet and a clearance plate.
The 4432 and 4452 manuals also print part numbers: 006918008 (all purpose), 006905008 (zipper), 006Q6A0150 (buttonhole) and 006914008 (button sewing), and for optional feet such as 006904008 (blind hem) and 006916008 (quilting/straight stitch). Singer's store numbers its listings differently; the Blind Hem Presser Foot above is SKU 250059596.01. Use a part number to identify a foot and the listing's group code to confirm fit. Not every "Heavy Duty" is in this table
- The HD6600, HD6700 and HD6800, and the HD6605, HD6705 and HD6805, are group CE in Singer's table, not MB.
- The HD0400S, HD0405S, HD0450S and X5004-HD are group SA. Singer titles the HD0400S and HD0450S manuals as Heavy Duty Serger manuals, and the HD0400S manual calls for Singer #2022 needles and threads upper and lower loopers, not a bobbin.
- The 44S, 5511, 5523, 6335M (Denim), CP6350M (Cosplay), HD500 Classic, HD6360 and HD6380 are group MB in Singer's table, but their needles and bobbins aren't covered here; check each one's own manual.
Check these on your machine before you order
- The model number. It picks the row above and the manual to open.
- The bobbin in the machine. Singer describes the Class 15 transparent as clear, with no color tint and flat faces. A metal bobbin isn't the type the documents name, and a clear one with slightly curved faces and a faint blue tint matches Singer's description of a 15J. If you can't tell, measure it against Singer's published sizes.
- The accessory tray, against the box lists above.
- Any needle pack the previous owner left. Compare what it says with your row in the table.

What this page does not tell you
- Singer's product pages for the 4411 and 4423 don't name a needle, and this page doesn't state one for those two models. Check the needle section of your model's manual. Singer's manuals page links both; they are large downloads, about 15 MB and 25 MB.
- Singer's group table doesn't list the 4511, 4523, 4532 or 4552. Its What is My Machine Group? page groups them with the 4411, 4423, 4432 and 4452; pick your model there and confirm the code before ordering a foot by group.
- The foot part numbers here are the ones printed in the 4432 and 4452 manuals. Singer's store numbers its listings differently, so find a listing by the foot's name and check its group code rather than searching for the manual's number.
- Singer describes style 2020 two ways: the 4432 and 4452 manuals call it a standard sharp needle, and Singer's needle guide calls it Universal. The style number is what links the two.

- Singer's store numbers its foot listings differently from the manuals' part numbers: the Blind Hem Presser Foot listing is SKU 250059596.01, while the 4432 and 4452 manuals list the blind hem foot as 006904008.
- Singer's machine-group table lists Heavy Duty 4411, 4423, 4432 and 4452 as group MB and has no rows for the 4511, 4523, 4532 or 4552.
- Singer's table lists HD6600, HD6605, HD6700, HD6705, HD6800 and HD6805 as group CE; HD0400S, HD0405S, HD0450S and X5004-HD as group SA; and 44S, 5511, 5523, 6335M (Denim), CP6350M (Cosplay), HD500 Classic, HD6360 and HD6380 as group MB.

- HD0400S manual: the machine uses SINGER #2022 needles and has upper and lower loopers; no bobbin appears in the manual.
