What you will find here

Three pages for the most common situation in home sewing: a machine that arrived secondhand, with no manual and no box, that needs a consumable today.

• Which needle, and what do the numbers mean? — The packages say 130/705 H and 90/14. Which goes in my machine, and which for my fabric?
• Class 15, 15J, L or M? — No manual, one bobbin, and they all look the same in the listing. Which do I buy?
• Does "universal" mean mine? — The listing says 'universal, fits most machines'. How do I know it fits mine?

How the pages are put together

Every figure is traced to a document we opened and read, and that document is listed at the bottom of the page with the date we read it. We prefer manufacturer specifications, published standards and official support documentation, and we quote them narrowly rather than generalising beyond what they say.

Where the answer depends on your exact model, we say so and point you at the specification field to look up. Knowing which number governs is more durable than being handed a guess.
